I created a series of prints with eight different beetles on bright backgrounds as a way to explore the relationships of silkscreen inks. The introductory silkscreen printing class consists of seven assignments, each using a different technique of printing. This assignment required us to use screen filler: the red ink on the screen that prevents ink from printing. You essentially "fill in" the spaces where you don't want ink to go. I was inspired by insect charts that are often found in scientists' offices and notebooks.
